Richard Smith at Thyme is another of Sheffield's great and good in the restaurant world. A recent modernisation and expansion of the old Smith's of Sheffield has given birth to Thyme, an up market contemporary bistro, which is airy and spacious. It seems equally suited to couples or groups, as it's lively without being overbearing.

Richard Smith at Thyme
There's a comfortable lounge bar area for the inevitable wait that comes with a Saturday evening table booking and it was so full of bright young things that it was hard to believe we were still in good old Sheffield... a more upbeat Manchester or Leeds sprang to mind.

We were cordially welcomed by the staff, but didn't get the personal attention of the management, which seemed to be reserved for regular clients or those who were a bit 'special'. That said, our wait for a table was brief enough and we were pleased to see that the main menu offered a substantial choice, further complemented by a couple of dishes on a specials menu. Meat, fish and vegetarian options all came with a modern twist, with portion sizes that were big enough to satisfy normal appetites.

It was a lovely evening and we would definitely go back again, if only to have a second go at the chocolate truffles. If you can't manage a pudding, but you do like chocolate, try them with coffee. They are absolutely divine.

** Please note, in 2006 Thyme Restaurant was divided into two eating establishments and the new establishments became known as Artisan and Catch. They are still managed and run by the same chef proprietors as Thyme Restaurant. Please see the Sheffschefs Directory for full details.
