Noodle Bar |

The following review has been written by Sheffschefs after a visit to the establishment. All visits are made anonymously, as ordinary paying customers. Someone emailed us to let us know about the Vietnamese Noodle Bar shortly after it opened and as they gave it a definite 'thumbs up', we quickly made a note to try it out. Decor seems to be based on the house style of noodle bars further afield in the likes of Leeds and London, with the requisite communal style tables, but this adds to the fun of it all and there are still plenty of smaller tables if you want to go it alone. It's bright and airy and altogether very pleasant and relaxed. The fun really begins when you start to ponder the menu, as although everything is listed first and foremost in English, the Thai name is given alongside, and so you can't help feeling that you are somewhere far more exotic than London Road. The menu is very comprehensive and although it's called a Noodle Bar, it doesn't stop at noodles. There are charcoal barbecue dishes such as tuna or kingfish in banana leaf, or lamb with galangal plus a vast array of other things to try, from 'sizzling' meat and fish to more mainstream fried rice dishes. Not sure quite how much to order, we plumped for prawn satay to start and a couple of noodle dishes to follow. The prawn satay was a surprise, as it came with a large bowl of cold rice noodles, which initially we weren't at all sure about. However, we took the plunge and tried them doused in the accompanying sweet chilli sauce, which transformed them into a very tasty dish. This alone was quite substantial, so we left some to keep space for the main courses. The fried noodle dishes also proved to be delicious, both the one with chicken and the one with mixed vegetables. Good-sized portions mean that diners are unlikely to leave the establishment feeling hungry. Other diners seemed to be having an equally pleasant meal and some of the dishes looked quite exciting.
Based on London Road, it's seems set to give some of the other restaurants in the area a run for their money, as you can get a substantial meal for less than the price of some takeaways. The environment is very relaxed and it seems as suitable for a group as it does for a couple, or even a single diner. The prices are very reasonable and we'll definitely be back again and may even take advantage of their free delivery service when we feel too lazy to leave home.
