Part of the chic and stylish West One complex off West Street, East One opened its doors last week, to bring a flavour of the Orient to this trend setting oasis in Sheffield.

Inside, the restaurant is impressively stylish, with high ceilings and sleek oriental decor. Seating is in the traditional refectory style, so sharing tables at busy times will probably be a feature, but there are also a few tables for 2 or 4 amongst the 100 or so covers. Thankfully, despite the style and location, it didn't feel in the least pretentious. Staff are courteous and friendly and joy of joys, there's no shame in having a glass of tap water when simple thirst demands it - they do have the trendy bottled stuff too, but the Peak District's best draught is offered as a choice.

East One has a varied menu, with plenty of choices for meat eaters, fish lovers and vegetarians. The menu is inspired by China, Japan and Thailand and revolves around different types of noodle dish, with rice dishes, salads and side dishes to increase the choices.

East one - waiting for you
Vegetarian dishes are marked and the menu also helpfully identifies dishes that contain peanuts. There is a special lunch menu between 12 noon and 5 p.m. in addition to the main menu and take away food is available at 10% less than the menu prices.

The food we had was delicious. Wok fried Soba noodles with chicken was piping hot with lovely fresh flavours. For one who positively dislikes Tofu, Vegetarian Pad Thai was a gamble though. It turned out to be a terrific dish, with definite bursts of lemon grass and peanut amongst the light rice noodles and crispy vegetables. (The tofu was better than memory served, but it was the only bit left on the plate at the end!)

East One is what Sheffield has been crying out for and no longer will we have to travel to other cities for good noodles. It's non-smoking, has very reasonable prices and excellent food. We will definitely return.
