You absolutely won't find any big patterned carpets, ethnic artefacts or knick-knacks at Cafe Guru. Although it serves authentic Indian food, it does so from a chic modern environment, a complete contrast to the traditional styling you might expect. The only thing that hinted at the type of food on offer as we walked in from the street, was the very tempting smell of spices floating out from the kitchen.

We went for an early evening meal on a Monday in November, before heading off afterwards to The Manhattan Club at bóho. Even early evening, it was pleasantly full and it continued to attract new customers throughout the time we were there. The good news for us was that our decision to eat out was made a bit 'last minute', so we made use of our Hi-Life Card to get a special two for one offer on our starters and main courses, so not only was it great food, but great value too.

Even at full prices though, it won't break the bank, as the starters were generally between £3 and £4 and the main courses averaged £7.50, with specials available from about £10. We ordered a portion of Vegetable Pakoras and some little spiced potato cakes called Alloo Tikki to start and whilst we waited for them, we had a couple of popadoms to keep us going. Even in a modern environment, some traditions are still hard to forfeit! Both starters were good, but the Pakoras in particular were a joy to eat, being crisp and light, with a delicious bite from fresh spices.

Cafe Guru have adopted an innovative approach to their main menu and diners simply select a base ingredient, either fish, prawns, vegetables, chicken or lamb and then decide which of their delectable sauces to have it cooked in. We tried chicken in a Pistachio Masaala sauce and vegetables in a Turka sauce. They were served on smart and simple white crockery and with a naan and rice to share, they left us feeling nicely full, rather than uncomfortably stuffed.

Service was smooth and friendly throughout and the courses were served at a very comfortable pace, leaving us to relax and enjoy what was a very pleasant dining experience.
